The acroynms used in various city and provincial documents pertaining to environmental regulations can be confusing, so here is a brief guide to some of the more common ones.  If you think that some others should be added to this list, please contact me.

  • AECOM – an engineering firm also known as AECOM Canada
  • C2MH Hill – an engineering firm
  • CEAA – Canadian (federal) Environmental Assessment Agency
  • CCL – Cumming Cockburn Ltd (merged with IBI Group in 2004)
  • CoA – C of A – Certificate of Approval
  • COSEWIC – Federal Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada
  • DFO – Federal department of Fisheries and Oceans
  • EA – Environmental Assessment
  • EAA – Ontario Environmental Assessment Act
  • ESA – Endangered Species Act
  • ESR – Environmental Study Report
  • IBI - an engineering firm also known as IBI Group
  • KNL – Kanata North Lands, now known as KNL Developments Ltd (owned by Richcraft and Urbandale)
  • LIRA – Ontario Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act
  • MCEA – Municipal Class Environmental Assessment
  • MoE – Ministry of the Environment (Ontario)
  • MTC – Ministry of Tourism and Culture (Ontario)
